What happened

A little bit of history behind the Phillip K Dick interview

The Phillip K. Dick interview was made in 1971 with the intention of airing it publicly on the Stanford student radio station KZSU in early 1972. It was recorded with my Tandberg reel to reel tape machine on two 7 inch reels using 2400 foot long, 0.5 mil thick, ¼ inch wide magnetic recording tape made by Sony Corporation.

Circumstances changed and my science fiction radio program didn’t happen. and I went on the road seeking my fame and fortune.

So in 1972 I packed up the reel to reel tapes, sealed them in plastic bags and locked them in heavy duty metal footlockers and stored them in my parent’s basement in Carmel California. And there they remained having never been available to the public for 47 years. Then in 2018 I had the audio recording digitized and I put a transcribed version of the interview on my website (jamesholmes.org).

And nothing happened. I had expected the search engines to find the site and catalog the science fiction section with the interviews and it would turn up in various searches. And I would get some comments. But nothing.

I knew my website was cataloged but when I searched for Phillip K Dick there was nothing of mine in the first 30 pages of results but I could see PKD got a lot of hits. So I assumed my website was lost in the murky depths of the internet and I moved on to other projects.

Then in 2022 I was contacted by someone who had run across the interview. I was excited, elated, amazed after all this time someone had found it. I asked what he thought. It was the first non friend feedback I had received. His main criticism was that the 70 page transcribed interview was too much to read in one take. Therefore I decided to release the interview in parts or blogs to a science fiction genre or otherwise and hope for the best. The 19 parts I’m publicizing is the result.

So I hope that after 52 years the interview (which I’ve always thought was worthwhile and interesting) would reach a wider audience of Phillip K Dick fanatics.
